XIII Florence Biennale
Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy
14-21 October 2023

The Florence Biennale is the major contemporary art and design exhibition in Florence
and one of the world's leading contemporary art and design exhibitions.

Artists and designers from 78 countries participated in the latest edition, which has been held under the patronage of the European Parliament, Italian Commission for UNESCO, Italian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Tuscany Region, and Municipality of Florence and was attended by more than 10,000 visitors.

• Neil F Wyatt •
As an artist of over thirty years, his collection of works using a combination of oil and acrylic paint, collage and mixed-medium are steeped in social issues, art history and contemporary expressions of the human condition from a male perspective. His work can be dramatic and/or delicate with cinematic inflections, also playful and whimsical, yet he strives to be technically correct and fastidious. His desire to involve and challenge the viewer has always been a major goal when undertaking and creating a series of works.
Lisa Bentley, Projects Manager from Art Approach NY, USA states that "his paintings muse and fuse the classical and the modern, the flat and the defined, it is personal biography meets movement, passion and a very physiological presence."

He states: "I am aware that my compositions are at times bold and confronting, but they can also be calm and restful, trapping the viewer in an imaginary landscape of ambiguous situations and events. I will, as an artist, continue to search and investigate my creative energies and visual directions as I strive to achieve my idea of creative perfection in my work."

ARTIST STATEMENT
"The Adolescent Dreamer is a concept I have been working on for some time. It basically represents a journey from child hood to adult with each work representing a particular series of events, images or personal experiences within a dream sequence.  Everything we come into contact with as our life progresses, all of our experiences, fulfilments and disillusions, successes and failures influence us and make us who we are.  How we react to these stimuli (events) and when we choose to allow them to surface will play a part in our daily lives that will ultimately influence or determine who and/or what we become.  Today more than at any time in history we are being inundated and overwhelmed with information and communication.  We store this mountain of information in our subconscious until it is processed and resurfaces in any number of manifestations.  I feel that the spacial aspect, imagery and the playful or often dignified figures in my work bring about a euphoric element that allows a sense of calm to be placed in the heart (or at the centre) of a sometimes extremely chaotic and technical world".

Judged by Leah Szanto, Visual Arts Co-ordinator, Kingston Arts Centre

"Neil Wyatt’s piece 'Reflection' is a bold piece, clearly demonstrating the artists’ talent in depicting space and light. The work presents concepts involving belief, surroundings and imagination; all fundamentally important when dealing with ‘exploration’ as a theme. The central figure and use of contrast are a powerful combination, commanding attention. The lone figure shown sitting in beams of light, prompted me as the viewer to create my own narrative, a context in which to fit the character".
